EWM in Poland, 2018-2020
repoted by Stanislava Skanas and Anna Grybos
The recent activities of women in mathematics in Poland were mainly related to the new, yet highly developing association of Polish Women in Mathematics (PWM). It was established to support the development of mathematical sciences in Poland and to contribute to raising the general level of mathematical knowledge. PWM also intends to provide a representation of the Polish women community dealing with mathematical sciences in society and to all state, private and local government bodies in the country and abroad. The initiative to create PWM was established in 2015 and the first General Meeting of PWM was organized already on April 2, 2016, in Rzeszow.
Among the activities are conferences like XIX Conference on Analytic Functions and Related Topics in 2018 as well as the series of conferences “On the Trail of Women in Mathematics” in 2017 and 2019. The first conference of the series was in honor of Professor Helena Rasiowa and her great works on algebraic logic and the mathematical foundations of computer science, while the second was in honor of “Princess of mathematics” – Professor Kowalewska and her noteworthy contributions to analysis, partial differential equations and mechanics together with her pioneering role as a female mathematician.
The conference of 2019 was also intended to be one of the elements of the celebration of the 100th Jubilee of AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, 2019 – the Year of Mathematics and the 100th Anniversary of the Polish Mathematical Society.
Within the conference, the latest achievements of researchers working in the field of mathematical and related sciences were presented. The conference topics covered a large range of issues, mainly related to differential equations and their applications, but not limited to these problems; representing the various branches of mathematics as Sofia Kowalewska influenced a wide range of these branches. The conference program included plenary lectures, thematic and poster sessions. An important element of the conference was also a quite hot discussion panel “Mobbing at universities”.
The series of the conferences “On the Trail of Women in Mathematics” met with great interest of the mathematical society in Poland and abroad. It gives a good perspective for future meetings.
