Technische Universität Berlin
PhD position in Discrete Optimization
Research Assistant (100% TV-L 13)
for 3 years
starting April 1, 2021, or later
A PhD position is available in the newly created “Discrete Optimization” group at TU Berlin (http://www.tu-berlin.de/?215588) with ties to the “Combinatorial Optimization and Graph Algorithms” group (www.tu-berlin.de/?69757). The successful applicant will participate in the DFG research project “Design of optimal impartial mechanisms” that is concerned with the design and mathematical analysis of voting and approval mechanisms that satisfy specific impartiality and fairness constraints and have applications in peer-review and peer-grading.
Candidates should have an excellent academic degree in mathematics, computer science or a related area, and must have very good knowledge in discrete mathematics and/or algorithm theory. Good communication skills and solid English writing skills are expected. Profound knowledge of optimization and related areas are desirable. Teaching experience (e.g., as a student assistant) is of advantage.
Besides its many cultural attractions, Berlin offers a strong scientific landscape including three major universities, the DFG funded mathematics research center MATH+ (https://mathplus.de) as well as the international graduate program Berlin Mathematical School (www.math-berlin.de); these offer opportunities for joint research and support for PhD students (e.g., meetings, lecture series, international summer schools etc.).
