Postdoctoral position at Lancaster (UK) in probability/combinatorics
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Lancaster University is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position on the project “Noncommutative statistical mechanics”, funded by the EPSRC New Horizons scheme (PI Natasha Blitvic).
This multifaceted project explores challenging open questions at the boundary of statistical mechanics (asymmetric exclusion processes), combinatorics, and noncommutative probability (random matrix theory, free probability). Depending on their specialism, the successful candidate will have an opportunity to join one of several existing collaborations, as well as develop their own approaches. They will be expected to work independently and in collaboration, engage with new ideas, and contribute new insights. The position comes with generous travel/collaboration funding and carries no teaching duties.
This work will take place in our thriving Pure Mathematics section, which has considerable expertise in algebra, geometry, analysis, probability, and discrete mathematics. Lancaster is one of the UK’s top departments in Mathematics and Statistics, ranked 5th equal in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, and 3rd for the impact of its research. The Department, which holds an Athena SWAN Bronze Award, strives to provide a supportive and welcoming environment for early career researchers.
For informal enquiries about the project, please contact Dr Natasha Blitvic (natasha.blitvic@lancaster.ac.uk).
The position will start on 1 August 2021, or at the earliest possible time thereafter, and will run for 18 months. For sufficiently compelling reasons, it may be possible to delay the start date by up to six months. Interviews will be carried out shortly after the closing date.
We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.
