A summer at a Top University – Research internships

I love studying mathematics, but could I imagine doing research in mathematics? What is a researcher doing, actually? Can one do an internship as a researcher? Where can I do that and how do I apply?

Sara was a visiting student at Cambridge University from August to December 2021, funded first by a Philippa Fawcett Scholarship 2021 and later by ERASMUS.

Where can I do a research internship?

• at most UK universities, some funding options may or may not be available.
  • Warwick Statistics Internship
  • Cambridge University, several programmes, among them the Philippa Fawcett Internships
  • Pathway to Research Scheme at the University of Bath
• at many research institutions, see e.g.
  • the Max Planck Institute in Bonn
  • Jülich supercomputing centre (close to Aachen)
• at most European Universities. There it is mainly not a structured programme, but nevertheless it is possible. The main prerequisite is that a professor is willing to host you. You need to find funding for yourself and contact the professor you wish to work with individually. Some universities help with funding, see e.g.
  • research projects in mathematics webpage of Bremen University
• Outside Europe:
  • Cornell
  • any major US university has a similar programme. However, funding is not always available, or it might be limited to certain nationalities.
