EWM in Cyprus, 2021-2022
The following EWM related/relevant activities have taken place in Cyprus in the 2020-22
reporting period:
EVENTS:
(1) 1st Women Mathematicians in Cyprus Networking Event:
A networking meeting was organized on the 6th of June 2022 focusing on bringing together
the local community of women scientists working in mathematics in Cyprus. The meeting
was attended by researchers across different ranks (from PhD student level to Professor)
and from a number of different universities and academic organisations across Cyprus.
(2) Women Mathematicians in Cyprus Establishing Event:
A meeting to officially set up the local EWM network in Cyprus is planned to be held in
the summer of 2022.
OTHER ACTIVITIES:
(1) Mailing List: Setting up a mailing list to disseminate EWM/CWM events and organize
local activities.
(2) Invited Talks: Invitation of Prof Dr Maria Vlasiou (University of Twente Eindhoven
University of Technology ) to speak to the 1st Women Mathematicians in Cyprus
Networking Event. Her presentation was titled “Mathematics in Diaspora: creating a
network of women in mathematics”.
(1) Funding Applications: Application to CWM funding call for 2022 with the aim to
organize the 1st Women Mathematicians in Cyprus Scientific Workshop (not funded).
(2) Reports: Preliminary work on the gender prevalence of women in mathematics and
other STEM disciplines in Cyprus has been submitted as a preprint (Breaking barriers
for women in science, arXiv, 2020, https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.01642). This report
summarizes the work produced by a team (including the local coordinator) at the
146th European Study Group with Industry/co-creation event with society (co-
organised by the local coordinator) on the Breaking barriers for women in Science
challenge proposed by the Cyprus-based non-profit AIPFE Cyprus-Women of Europe.
The main aim of this challenge was to quantify the barriers that women face in science
to provide data-driven policy recommendations in Cyprus and beyond.
