EWM in Russia, 2020-2022
Every year we organize the conference “Women in Mathematics” in honor of the International
Women in Mathematics Day. The organizers of the conference are the Sobolev Institute of
Mathematics, Novosibirsk State University and Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok
(Novosibirsk, Russia). The chairman of the Organizing Committee is Inessa Matveeva (EWM
coordinator, CWM ambassador in Russia).
In 2021, the conference was held on May 12: http://math.nsc.ru/LBRT/d5/conference/WM/2021/
At the opening of the conference, the Director of the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics S.S.
Goncharov made a welcome speech. Within the framework of the conference, women from 18
laboratories of the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics gave scientific talks on various areas of
mathematics: algebra, mathematical logic, differential equations, mathematical statistics,
mathematical modeling, graph theory, discrete analysis, optimization methods, computational
mathematics, etc.
In 2022, the conference was held on June 6: http://math.nsc.ru/LBRT/d5/conference/WM/2022/
At the opening of the conference, the Director of the Mathematical Center in Akademgorodok
E.P. Vdovin and the Dean of the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics of Novosibirsk
State University I.V. Marchuk made their welcome speeches. This year, young scientists, PhD
students and Master’s students from the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics and Novosibirsk State
University gave scientific talks. Each speaker received, as a gift, the book “Under the sign of
torus” from the series “Comics & Science” devoted to Maryam Mirzakhani. The sessions were
held in a mixed format: offline at the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics and online. The
conference was attended by participants from China, Germany, Iran, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine,
and Uzbekistan.
Events in honor of the International Women in Mathematics Day are held in different cities of
Russia, including:
• The Faculty of Mathematics in HSE University (Higher School of Economics, National
Research University, Moscow, Russia). In particular, on May 12, 2021, V.A. Shastin
gave a lecture about scientific achievements of the outstanding mathematician Joan
Birman in the field of knot theory: https://math.hse.ru/news/469618565.html Joan
Birman herself told about her biography to Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics
Alexandra Skripchenko during the interview:

• The Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Tomsk State University (Tomsk, Russia).
In particular, in 2021, Elena Gurina and Yakov Grinshpon prepared an interesting video
in honor of the International Women in Mathematics Day:

• Euler International Mathematical Institute (Saint Petersburg, Russia). On May 12, 2021,
it was held a scientific seminar dedicated to the works of Maryam Mirzakhani and modern investigations in this field: https://indicator.ru/mathematics/v-institute-eilera-proveli-nauchnyi-seminar-v-chest-mezhdunarodnogo-dnya-zhenshin-matematike-19-05-2021.htm
Russian women actively participate in the organization of a large number of scientific
conferences, seminars, olympiads, and festivals in Mathematics.
Events dedicated to women in science and other fields are regularly organized in Russia. In
particular, the festival “Academina” is regularly held in Novosibirsk:
http://www.academina.nsk.ru/. This festival is organized and conducted by the Union of Women
of the Novosibirsk Region and the Novosibirsk Branch of the Federation of Women with
University Education in order to promote careers of women in science, vocational education and
other sectors of the regional economy. The main objectives of the festival are to identify and
support talented and successful women working in the field of science, education and economy
of the Novosibirsk region; to popularize creative professions of a scientist, a teacher of higher
education, and a researcher; to establish creative contacts, strengthen and encourage friendly
relations. Over the years, several female mathematicians have won the Academina Prize. This
year, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia have launched a project of female
mentoring for students “Women: School of Mentoring”:
https://www.minobrnauki.gov.ru/action/proekt_jenschini_shkola_nastavnichestva/. This project
provides a unique opportunity for female students to receive personal recommendations and
experience from successful female leaders of Russia. We plan to develop the mentoring school
for female students in Mathematics.
