The Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) invites applications for the position of Post-Doctoral Research Associate funded by an ERSRS/STFC grant to work on investigating new quantum algorithms for problems in quantum field theories with future applications to Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD).
You will work with Dr Sergii Strelchuk who is a Royal Society University Research Fellow, DAMTP at the Centre for Quantum Information and Foundations (CQIF), University of Cambridge and you will also collaborate with Dr Bipasha Chakraborty from the Southampton High Energy Physics Group.
The first part of the project aims to study the structure of computational problems that arise in the context of lattice QCD and their potential for quantum speedups. The second part of the project will investigate bespoke quantum simulation techniques for quantum field theories with an aim to extend them to QCD.
This is a collaborative project between CQIF at the University of Cambridge and Southampton High Energy Physics Group. Relevant research interests of the CQIF group include quantum algorithms, quantum computing and simulation of quantum systems. The other research interests of the Southampton High Energy Physics group include: lattice QCD, physics beyond the standard model, particle physics and cosmology, neutrino physics, b-quark and kaon phenomenology, exact renormalization group, extra-dimensional models of the weak interactions, weak interaction corrections at high energies, twistor methods, holography, strings and branes, and high density QCD.
Duties include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research objectives, proposals and projects. The role holder will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required, and to assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies. You must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts. You may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating to the research area.
Limit of tenure: 20 months
