Professorship (W3) for “Mathematical Statistics”
The Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU Berlin) invites applications for a joint appointment process (“Berlin Model”) with the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS), Leibniz Institute in the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V., for a
Professorship (W3) for “Mathematical Statistics”
to be filled by 01.04.2025.
The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is one of the leading research universities in Germany, achieving top positions among the best German universities in an international comparison. It is one of three universities of excellence within the Berlin University Alliance.
The Weierstrass Institute, a member of the Leibniz Association, is a leading European research institute in the heart of Berlin. It conducts internationally recognized, project-oriented, cutting-edge research in applied mathematics with the aim of solving complex problems in technology, science and the economy. The institute deals with the entire scientific solution process, starting with mathematical modeling, followed by the theoretical analysis of models and ending with the numerical simulation of the solution.
The holder of the position will lead a corresponding research group at the Weierstrass Institute and represent the subject of “Mathematical Statistics” in teaching at the Department of Mathematics at HU Berlin. The teaching obligation is 2 teaching hours per semester week („LVS“).
The central research task of the position is linked to the Weierstrass Institute and includes the development of innovative mathematical analysis methods and algorithms dealing with statistical problems. The professional focus of the professorship is at the interface to data-driven problems and their applications. In particular, the appointed professor will deal with statistical algorithms, stochastic processes and tasks in the area of machine learning; where methodological and interdisciplinary fields of application are preferably in the main application areas of the Weierstrass Institute. Readiness for further collaborations in domains with data-related questions is expected.
The acquisition and management of third-party funded projects is expected as well as the willingness to work on Berlin collaborative projects such as the Cluster of Excellence MATH+ and collaborative research centers.
Other tasks include leadership and development of employees, promotion of young scientists, women and social diversity, transfer of knowledge and technology, initiatives of internationalisation, engagement in gender- and diversity-competent and sustainability-oriented action, and committee and commission work.
Applicants must meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in accordance with § 100 of the „Berliner Hochschulgesetz“; in particular, a successfully completed doctoral degree in mathematics or a related subject is required.
Several years of research and management experience is expected. The candidate has an international profile, which is characterized by relevant publications, visibility at international conferences and collaborations. Additionally, experience in teaching of relevant topics, supervising theses, and in academic self-administration as well as in acquiring and implementing third-party funding or collaborative projects is expected.

This includes commitment to the promotion of young scientists and women, gender and diversity competence in the sense of creating diversity-sensitive working and study conditions, and providing substantive impulses in research and teaching, as well as participation in academic self-administration. Interdisciplinary collaborations and initiatives in knowledge and technology transfer are desired. As an internationally renowned university and research institution, we require a good knowledge of English and expressly welcome applications from non-German-speaking scientists.
The HU Berlin and the Weierstrass Institute aim to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and strongly encourage qualified female scientists to apply. Applicants with severe disabilities, who are qualified, will be given priority. The HU Berlin and the Weierstrass Institute value the diversity of their members and pursue the goals of equal opportunities.
The HU Berlin and the WIAS are certified as family-friendly institutions and offer you and your family support when moving to Berlin with the Dual Career Service. Applications from abroad are explicitly welcome.
