EWM report in Slovenia 2022-2024
EWM Activities in Slovenia in 2022-2024
We closely collaborate with the Committee for Women at the Society of Mathematicians, Physicists and
Astronomers of Slovenia.
1) Our country coordinator Ganna Kudryavtseva was elected to the function of the Coordinator of
the Committee for Women of the Society and a member of the Executive Committee of the
Society for 2024-2026.
2) Our country coordinator Jasna Prezelj was reelected to the function of the Head of the
Committee for Mathematics and a member of the Executive Committee of the Society for 2024-
26.
Our country coordinators Marjeta Kramar Fijavž and Jasna Prezelj attended the EWM General Meeting
2022 in Helsinki, Finland. Within the meeting, Marjeta Kramar Fijavž co-organized a mini-symposium
entitled “CA18232 Mathematical models for interacting dynamics on networks” with 7 invited female
speakers.
Marjeta Kramar Fijavž was selected as a member of EMS Committee for Women in Mathematics for the
period 2022-2025.
We participated in Slovene translations of mathematical expressions for the book “Our Women
Scientists. How women co-created science in Yugoslavia” edited by Jovana Mihajlović Trbovc and issued
by ZRC SAZU in 2023.
In 2023 the Society has organized a conference dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Josip Plemelj, the
first rector of Ljubljana University. The organization was coordinated by Jasna Prezelj, and the
conference had many talks by female mathematicians at different stages of their career.
In 2023 Slovenia hosted European Girl’s Mathematical Olympiad (EMGO). The local organizer was the
Society of Mathematicians, Physicists and Astronomers of Slovenia. During the Olympiad, on May 17
2023 there was a round table about successful women in mathematics. Among the speakers was Neža
Mramor Kosta, the first female full professor in Mathematics in Slovenia, our guest was the recent
female (second after Maryam Mirzakhani) Fields medalist Maryna Viazovska.
On March 8, 2024, we had an informal meeting and chat among a smaller group of female
mathematicians at the Department of Mathematics of Ljubljana University. We plan to make such
meetings more frequent and aim to increase the number of participants.
On May 15, 2024, we organized a Round table to celebrate the Day of Women in Mathematics. The
speakers were Barbara Drinovec Drnovšek and Vesna Iršič from the Department of Mathematics of
Ljubljana University, among the invited participants there were also the 1st year students of
mathematics Katarina Grilej and Kaja Rajter, who were earlier successful at the Girl’s Mathematical
Olympiad and were team leaders of the Slovenian team at the EMGO in 2024 in Georgia.
