EWM report for Austria 2022-2024

Report by Zahra Nazemian (University of Graz), Coordinator for Austria https://sites.google.com/ view/zahra-nazemian/home

The activities of Austrian Women in Mathematics during my tenure as the Austrian coordinator are summarized below:

  1. Foundation and Strengthening of the Association of Women in Mathematics A2WiM:
    1. One of the key achievements was the establishment and reinforce- ment of the Association of Women in Mathematics. This initiative brought together women mathematicians from various disciplines and positions in universities across Austria. They decided to create an association to introduce and support women in mathematics through- out Austria.
    2. The association serves as a platform where not only successful women are recognized and celebrated, but also where workshops, seminars, and conferences are organized for various purposes.
    3. Although initially founded by a few women, the association now boasts hundreds of members. Members receive updates and infor- mation through various social media channels such as Instagram, Twitter, email, and the association’s website, https://www.a2wim. net/home.
    4. The group operates without a sponsor, with members often using their own grants to organize events and cover the costs of the website. The strong motivation and dedication of women in Austria are the main reasons for the association’s success.
  2. Organizing Celebrations of Women in Mathematics at Graz Uni- versity:
    1. We organized the celebration of women in mathematics at Graz University every May or June in 2022, 2023, and 2024 in honor of Maryam Mirzakhani. We successfully obtained several grants to fund these events.
    2. The goal was to promote young women scientists in university of Graz to continue striving until they achieve their goals.
  3. Austrian Women in Mathematics Day:

a. Austrian Women in Mathematics Day has been held and celebrated as a major conference every year in February. The fourth one was on February 22, 2024, and the fifth one is also planned to be held in person in Vienna.

4. (Third) Get-together Workshop and Career Advice for Young Mathematicians:

  1. The goal of this workshop is to foster networking between young mathematicians, ranging from B.Sc. students to young postdocs. This event specifically aims to support female and non-binary math- ematicians by providing a platform to connect with role models of different backgrounds, both from inside and outside of academia, who are ready to share insights and experiences from their own career paths.
  2. The workshop was held online on June 18, 2024, with 30 partic- ipants. It was organized by Corinna Perchtold (Johannes Kepler University, Linz) and Diana Carbajal (University of Vienna, MSCA fellow, funded by the European Union).
  3. Its website is https://sites.google.com/view/career-advice-a2wim/home.

5. A2WiM Tea Time meets VSM Happy Hour:

  1. A2WiM hosted an in-person tea time in Vienna in collaboration with VSM (Vienna School of Mathematics) Happy Hour on November 21, 2023, at Fladerei Berggasse. The topic was ”Let’s talk about diversity.”
  2. The next one will also be held very soon this year.

6. Spotlight Program:

a. In the Spotlight program, we give visibility to three women mathe- maticians in or from Austria on specific topics including Outreach, Tenure Track positions, Mathematics in industry, Women mathe- maticians in leading positions, Kids and career, Grant applications, From math to application, and Moving for work.
