Postdoc (2 years) in computational methods for wave propagation in complex geometry
The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics is offering a postdoctoral scholarship within the project “Computational methods for wave propagation in complex geometry”. The scholarship is full-time for two years with starting date 1 February 2025 or by agreement. Apply latest 10 November 2024.
The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts research in computational
mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modelling and analysis, and mathematical statistics. Our teaching is conducted at all levels and includes mathematics, mathematical statistics and computational science. Among our partners are international research groups, academic institutions, public organizations and companies.
Project description
Wave propagation arises in a wide range of applications in science and engineering. Many realistic models in 2D and 3D are posed on domains with complex geometrical features. The mathematical model is a hyperbolic partial differential equation with complex geometry at boundaries and material interfaces. For efficient numerical simulation of wave propagation in such models, it is important to design computational techniques that are stable, accurate, and geometrically flexible. The central aim of this project is a novel computational method for wave propagation on complex geometry. We will use a novel and unconventional finite element method based on the Galerkin difference framework and resolve geometrical features by using the fictitious domain approach. We will implement the method in the state-of-the-art C++ software library deal.II. This is a very active research area that involves modeling, mathematical analysis, and computer implementation. The appointed postdoc will have the opportunity to carry out research in collaboration with the computational mathematics group at Umeå University as well as external collaborators.
This postdoctoral scholarship is financed and administered by the Kempe Foundation (JCSMK24-0013). The stipend is tax-free and will be 737 000 SEK for two years, meaning 368 500 SEK per year.
Qualifications
To qualify as a postdoctoral scholarship holder, the postdoctoral fellow is required to have completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This qualification requirements must be fulfilled no later than at the time of the decision about scholarship recipient. Priority should be given to candidates who completed their doctoral degree, according to what is stipulated in the paragraph above, no later than three years prior. If there are special reasons, candidates who completed their doctoral degree prior to that may also be eligible. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, appointments of trust in trade union organizations, military service, or similar circumstances, as well as clinical practice or other forms of appointment/assignment relevant to the subject area.
A doctoral degree in computational mathematics, computational science, applied mathematics or other related discipline is required. Good knowledge of oral and written English is required. Proven knowledge and experience in finite element methods and programming skills in C++ is highly advantageous.
Umeå offers excellent working and living conditions. The city is young and located right next to a large river. It is surrounded by forests and lakes and lies close by the sea. In the vicinity there are plenty of opportunities for both indoor and outdoor activities.
