Women in Maths talk for students: research internships
A summer at a Top University – Research internships
I love studying mathematics, but could I imagine doing research in mathematics? What is a researcher doing, actually? Can one do an internship as a researcher? Where can I do that and how do I apply?
If any of these questions has crossed your mind previously, then come to our talk to find out!
Our speakers for Tuesday, February 15th, 17:00h live @LU (room to be announced) and on zoom.
Sara Rousta – B.Sc. student in Mathematics at Lund University.
Carina Geldhauser – biträdande universitetslektor at LU and EWM standing committee member
Sara was a visiting student at Cambridge University from August to December 2021, funded first by a Philippa Fawcett Scholarship 2021 and later by ERASMUS.
Where can I do a research internship?
- at most UK universities, some funding options may or may not be available.
- Warwick Statistics Internship
- Cambridge University, several programmes, among them the Philippa Fawcett Internships
- Pathway to Research Scheme at the University of Bath
- at many research institutions, see e.g.
- the Max Planck Institute in Bonn
- Jülich supercomputing centre (close to Aachen)
- at most European Universities. There it is mainly not a structured programme, but nevertheless it is possible. The main prerequisite is that a professor is willing to host you. You need to find funding for yourself and contact the professor you wish to work with individually. Some universities help with funding, see e.g.
- Outside Europe:
- Cornell
- any major US university has a similar programme. However, funding is not always available, or it might be limited to certain nationalities.
