Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Mathematical Modelling of Social Systems and Applications to Public Policy
The Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Mathematics of Social Systems and Applications to Public Policy. The postholder will join the department on a fixed-term basis for 2 years, working under the supervision of Professor Peter Grindrod CBE.
The successful candidate will work at the intersection between mathematics and governmental policy, to adapt and develop suitable methodologies for the analysis of behavioural responses to public policy initiatives. They will also be involved with the study of social network data related to online harms, grooming and radicalisation, using techniques including, but not limited to, peer-to-peer networks (both static and time dependent), approaches for dealing with shortcomings and biases, and probabilistic methods for drawing evidence-based inferences.
Candidates must have, or be close to completing, a PhD in mathematics or a related discipline, and will possess sufficient specialist knowledge to work within emerging fields of mathematics appropriate to modelling societal and public policy issues. They must be able to work well independently, managing their own academic research and administrative activities, as well as collaboratively with colleagues in partner institutions and research groups. As this role will involve networking with funders across multiple disciplines, the postholder must have excellent verbal communication skills, alongside the ability to write for publications.
