Research Assistant Position (f/m/d) in Excellence in Photonic Crystal Surface Emitting Lasers (Ref. 22/39) at WIAS, Berlin, Germany
WIAS invites applications for a
Research Assistant Position (f/m/d)
(Ref. 22/39)
in the Research Group
“Laser Dynamics”
(Head: Priv.-Doz. Dr. Uwe Bandelow) starting from 01.01.2023.
This position will be funded for a period up to 36 months by the Leibniz Collaborative Excellence program. The research subject will be a theoretical and numerical study of photonic crystal surface-emitting semiconductor lasers (PCSELs). It will be conducted in close collaboration with physicists and electrical engineers from the Ferdinand Braun Institute (FBH) in Berlin.
The work tasks include:
The researcher will work on the theoretical aspects of the collaborative project „Excellence in Photonic Crystal Surface Emitting Lasers“, which aims to develop a new generation of high-power, high-quality semiconductor emitters. The basic theoretical model used for the simulation and analysis of PCSELs is given by a system of PDEs defined in 1 (temporal) and 2 (spatial) dimensions. It is expected that under the supervision of the experts from WIAS and FBH, the researcher will work on the development of efficient numerical tools suited for solving the related spectral problem and numerical integration of the dynamical PDE model.
We are looking for: Applicants with a Ph.D. degree in mathematics, scientific computing, or theoretical physics and a good speaking and writing skills in English. Experience in efficient numerical methods for PDEs and good programming skills (e.g., C++, Julia) are expected; knowledge of semiconductor device modeling and semiconductor physics would be an advantage.
What we offer:
● WIAS Berlin is a premier research institution known for its strength in optimization, optimal control, dynamical systems, and applied mathematics in general. It has hosted flagship conferences in mathematical optimization such as ICCOPT 2019.
● A certified (Audit berufundfamilie) family-friendly work environment.
● Berlin is one of the most culture-rich and diverse international cities in the world. It offers endless opportunities to enjoy life outside work, while being very affordable compared to other major cities. Neither the job nor living in Berlin requires German language (although WIAS offers free German courses). We highly welcome international applications. Scientifically, Berlin offers a rich landscape with numerous opportunities for research, as well as job prospects in academia and industry.
Technical queries should be directed to Dr. M. Radziunas (Mindaugas.Radziunas@wias-berlin.de).
This is a full-time position, remunerated according to TVöD Bund and limited to three years.
The Weierstrass Institute is an equal opportunity employer. We explicitly encourage female researchers to apply for the offered position. Among equally qualified applicants, disabled candidates will be given preference.
