The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises seven non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes belong to the Leibniz Association.

Research Assistant Position (f/m/d)
(Ref. 24/14)

in the Research Group

“Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computing“

(Acting Head: Prof. Dr. V. John) starting 1. November 2024.

The position is framed into a collaborative research project involving several leading European research institutions, aimed at developing a scalable, high-performance computational platform for digital twins of human organs using the deal.II library (https://www.dealii.org/).

The role of WIAS (PI Alfonso Caiazzo) will be to develop a prototype of a liver mechanics simulator accounting for multiscale processes (coupling of mechanics and vasculature) and integrating data assimilation methods to enable model personalization based on available clinical or preclinical data.

We are looking for: A highly motivated researcher with a PhD in a field related to computational mechanics, numerical methods for partial differential equations, computational multiscale models, with the willingness to engage on innovative and interdisciplinary research questions. The successful candidate will be hosted by the research group Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computing (head: Prof. V. John) and she/he is expected to work in close collaboration with project partners.

A strong background in at least one of these areas is required: scientific and high-performance computing, computational mechanics, reduced-order models. Experience with scientific object-oriented programming languages (C++, Python) is very relevant. Knowledge of deal.II is desirable but not required.
The position does not require knowledge of German languages and international applications are welcomed.

What we offer:
• WIAS Berlin is a premier research institution known for its strength in optimization, optimal control, dynamical systems, and applied mathematics in general.
• Mobile working
• A certified (Audit berufundfamilie) family-friendly work environment.
• Berlin is one of the most culture-rich and diverse international cities in the world. It offers endless opportunities to enjoy life outside work, while being very affordable compared to other major cities. Neither the job nor living in Berlin requires German language (although WIAS offers free German courses). We highly welcome international applications. Scientifically, Berlin offers a rich landscape with numerous opportunities for research, as well as job prospects in academia and industry.

Technical queries should be directed to Dr. Alfonso Caiazzo (caiazzo@wias-berlin).

The working hours are 39 hours per week and the position is remunerated according to TVoeD Bund and is limited to two years.
The Weierstraß Institute is an equal opportunity employer. We explicitly encourage female researchers to apply for the offered position. Among equally qualified applicants, disabled candidates will be given preference.

Please upload complete application documents including cover letter, curriculum vitae, certificates, and a copy of your Ph.D. thesis (or relevant publications) as soon as possible via our online job-application facility (https://short.sg/j/48445723) using the button “Apply online” (https://short.sg/a/48445723).

The advertisement is open with immediate effect and will remain open until the position will be filled.

We are looking forward to your application!
