A position exists for a computational applied mathematician, from 1 January 2020, to work on developing a fundamental understanding of transition and ensuing turbulent mixing in stratified shear flows. The successful candidate will be based at the Department of Applied Mathematics & Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge and will collaborate closely with Professor Colm-cille Caulfield and Professor Rich Kerswell.
The role holder will conduct numerical simulations and analyse the results using a range of approaches drawn from recent developments in applied mathematics. Key areas of development include generalised stability theory, dynamical systems theory, reduced order modelling such as dynamic mode decomposition and various aspects of machine learning. Demonstrated familiarity with at least one of these areas is essential, and familiarity with instability, turbulence and mixing in stratified shear flows is also very desirable.
Duties include: running and analysing simulations and developing and conducting individual and collaborative research objectives. The role holder will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required. You must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts. You may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating to research area.
The successful candidate will have or be about to receive a PhD in mathematics, engineering or a closely related area. The starting salary is dependent on qualifications and experience.
