Research Associate (Fixed Term)
The Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate funded by the ‘Homotopy Theory of Moduli Spaces’ grant, which is held by Prof Oscar Randal-Williams. The post holder would work in the Topology group (faculty members include Prof Gabriel Paternain, Prof Ivan Smith, Dr Ailsa Keating, and Prof Jake Rasmussen) on projects in algebraic and geometric topology, on topics such as: moduli spaces, cobordism categories, spaces of manifolds, configuration spaces, mapping class groups, surgery, characteristic classes, K-theory, and applications of homotopy theory to geometry, and related research areas. The post is available for 1 year from 1 September 2022 (or by negotiation). Appointments will be made at an appropriate point on the University’s Research Associate scale.
Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field, a strong research track record, and may have previous postdoc experience. The successful candidate may be asked to lecture one course (24 fifty-minute lectures and associated examples classes) per year at Part III (Masters or graduate) level, or to provide a comparable level of teaching support to other members within the topology group (e.g. examples classes). Duties and their timing are flexible. Further duties include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research objectives, proposals and projects. Candidates will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required. They must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts. The post holder may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating to the research area.
