Applications are invited for a postdoctoral Research Associate in computational mathematics, funded by Dr Anders Hansen’s Leverhulme Prize in mathematics. The project is titled “Foundations of computations in mathematics of information” and focuses on establishing the boundaries of what digital computers can achieve in mathematics of information. We interpret mathematics of information in a wide sense to also include deep learning and artificial intelligence.

The successful candidate should have, or be about to receive, a PhD in mathematics, applied mathematics, computer science or related areas. The project emphasises foundations, and a strong theoretical background in optimisation and computational mathematics is preferred. Knowledge of computability and complexity theory will be helpful as well as general numerical analysis. Some experience in programming is useful, however, the emphasis will be on theoretical results.

Duties will include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research objectives, proposals and projects. The role holder will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required, and to assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies. They must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts. They may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating to the research area.

Enquiries can be addressed to Dr Anders Hansen: ach70@cam.ac.uk.
