Duties and Responsibilities

The department has internationally recognised research groups in pure and applied analysis; fluid mechanics; mathematical physics; geometry and topology; algebra, number theory and combinatorics; mathematical modelling in biology, finance, industry and society.

Applications are invited for a full-time Research Fellow position to work with Professor Timo Betcke on the project SysGenX: Composable software generation for system-level simulation at Exascale.

The responsibilities of the post will include: Carrying out vigorous, high-level research on the scientific computing of boundary element methods at extreme scales, including high-frequency Fast Multipole Methods, fast direct solvers, and applications to electromagnetic scattering. To interface with other team members at UCL, Cambridge, Imperial, and Oxford. Participation at seminars and colloquia in the subject. To submit publications regularly in refereed journals. Participation at national and international conferences. Contribution to high-quality open-source code development.

This post is available from 1st October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter and the post is funded until 30th November 2024 in first instance.

Key Requirements

Candidates should either have a PhD or equivalent qualification in Mathematics or a related subject, should be finalising their PhD or waiting for their viva date.

Please note: Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent on award and confirmation of a PhD (or equivalent). If this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B, point 26 (salary £33,257 per annum inclusive of London allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.

The successful candidate is expected to have a proven track record in research and publishing, have a strong software development expertise in a modern scientific computing language. Preferred languages are Python, C++ and Rust, but transferrable skills from other relevant languages are taken into account. They should also have knowledge of and commitment to software development best practise including issue tracking, testing, documentation, version control and continuous integration. As well as have a strong desire to work at the heart of, and fully participate in, an active research group in the field, have excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate participation in a research group, and excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

An outstanding candidate will have interest and research experience with at least some of the following subjects: Finite element and Boundary Element Methods, large-scale computational simulations, as well as a track record of high-quality open-source software development.
