Duties and Responsibilities
The department has internationally recognised research groups in pure and applied analysis; fluid mechanics; mathematical physics; geometry and topology; algebra, number theory and combinatorics; mathematical modelling in biology, finance, industry and society.

Applications are invited for a full-time Research Fellow position to work with Dr Ian Petrow. The post is funded by an EPSRC New Investigator Award titled ‘Strong subconvexity and an optimal large sieve inequality for PGL(2)’. In this project, we will investigate analytic aspects of number theory, especially regarding the theory of modular and automorphic forms.

The responsibilities of the post will include: carrying out vigorous, high-level research in analytic number theory and automorphic forms, interfacing with other team members including mentoring PhD students, submitting publications regularly in refereed journals; participating in local seminars and in national and international conferences.

This post is available from July 1, 2022 and is funded until 20 May 2025 in the first instance.

Key Requirements
Candidates should either have a PhD or equivalent qualification in mathematics, or should be finalising their PhD or waiting for their viva date.

Please note: appointment at Grade 7 is dependent on award and confirmation of a PhD (or equivalent). If this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B, point 26 (salary £33,958 per annum inclusive of London allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.

The successful candidate is expected to have expertise and research experience in analytic number theory, especially the analytic theory of L-functions and modular/automorphic forms, their analytic aspects, and arithmetic applications. They will also have a proven track record in mathematical research and publishing, excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate participation in a research group and communication with collaborators, as well as the ability to give clear mathematical presentations and communicate mathematical ideas effectively, in both written and oral form, and to a range of audiences.

An outstanding candidate will have experience of effective teaching, a broad mathematical background and competence in areas of mathematics adjacent to the project, and technical knowledge of, or research experience in: moments of L-functions, reciprocity formulas, the subconvexity problem, and/or period integrals of automorphic forms.
