EWM in Republic of Serbia, 2021-2022
As we wrote in previous reports, women are almost 50% of mathematicians in Serbia. Regarding
teaching mathematics, the percentage of women is even higher. For example, at Math Department,
University of Novi Sad, Faculty of sciences, there are 24 male and 29 female employed in teaching
at 7 chairs. Women are majority at Analysis, probability and differential equations, Applied
analysis, Numerical mathematics and Mathematical logic and discrete mathematics. Men are
majority at Functional analysis, geometry and topology, Algebra and theoretical computer science
and Applied algebra. Precise data can be seen in attached files: statNS2022.ods and statNS2022.pdf
There is no female mathematical association yet, but EWM members from Serbia actively act
through the Serbian Mathematical Sciences Association (which officially has 56 women out of a
total of 108 members) and other local and regional mathematical societies in Serbia. Also, we are
involved in several female science associations not restricted just to mathematics.
From resent activities of our members we should emphasize the following:
In September 2021 we took part in the panel discussion about possibilities for women in science as
part of the Researchers’ Night event “Coffee with women scientists” where we talked with many
girls, students and young mathematicians.
Our members participated in the second edition of the Online Workshop on Generalized Functions
celebrating the international day for women in mathematics on May 12, 2022, and one member,
Dora Selesi, was involved in organization also.
We also took part in the Spring Festival of Mathematics in Novi Sad in May 2022, which was
organized by the Society of Mathematicians of Novi Sad on the occasion of the May Month of
Mathematics.
Recently, we prepared translation of the Women In Mathematics poster into Serbian language, see
