A few days after Russia’s illegal attack on Ukraine, the young
mathematician Yulia Zdanovska died at the age of 21 due to a Russian
missile that hit her residential area in the city of Kharkiv. In 2017,
she had participated in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad and
won the silver medal. Recently, she was involved with “Teach4Ukraine”.

European Women in mathematics (EWM) expresses its deep sympathy with
the family of Yulia and our fellow mathematicians presently under
threat. EWM strongly condemns Russia’s illegal attack on Ukraine and the
resulting violation of values of freedom and self-determination, which
form the basis of our scientific community.
